| This masterwork, created out of a single marble block from the quarries at Carrara that had already been worked on by an earlier hand, Agostino di Duccio 40 years earlier. The statue was originally commissioned as one of a series of 12 for the buttresses of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, but was regarded a masterpiece and should be placed at a more prominent location. Some experts claim the proportions are not correct, such as the head and hands are too big, Michelangelo purposely over exaggerated these features to compensate for its original intended location, he definitively established his prominence as a sculptor of extraordinary technical skill and strength of symbolic imagination. This work of art can be seen at Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia, (Photos not allowed) Go early to avoid the long wait, a lesser copy of the statue is located in the Piazza della Signoria in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
